About Airlie Castle

An 18th-century country house built to replace the destroyed Airlie Castle.

History of Airlie Castle

Built in 1793, the current Airlie Castle is a Georgian country house that replaced the original Airlie Castle, which was destroyed by the Marquis of Argyll in 1640 during a clan feud with the Ogilvies. The original castle was the seat of the Earls of Airlie, and its destruction was part of the complex political and religious conflicts of 17th-century Scotland. The current house maintains the family's connection to their ancestral seat while reflecting 18th-century architectural preferences for classical proportions and comfortable living. The Airlie family's resilience in rebuilding after destruction exemplifies the enduring nature of Scottish noble heritage.
