About Auchenrivock Tower

A late 16th-century L-plan tower house on the Buccleuch Estate, now ruined.

History of Auchenrivock Tower

Built in the late 16th century, Auchenrivock Tower was constructed as an L-plan tower house during the period when Scottish castle architecture was evolving to emphasize comfort alongside defense. The tower served as a Border stronghold in the turbulent frontier region between Scotland and England, where constant raiding and conflict shaped the local architecture and culture. Now ruined and part of the Buccleuch Estate, Auchenrivock represents the substantial landholdings of one of Scotland's most powerful noble families. The tower's ruins demonstrate the quality of construction typical of Border fortifications and the prosperity of families who could afford such substantial stone buildings in this contested region.
