About Auchterhouse Castle
A 13th-century castle with connections to Scotland's medieval past.
History of Auchterhouse Castle
Dating from around the 13th century, Auchterhouse Castle represents one of the earlier stone fortifications in Angus, built during the period when Scotland was establishing its network of royal and noble strongholds. The castle's early date places it among the generation of Scottish castles built during the reigns of Alexander II and Alexander III, when Scotland was consolidating its territorial control and defensive capabilities. Though little remains of the original structure, its historical significance lies in its role as part of Scotland's medieval defensive network and its contribution to the complex tapestry of Angus's castle heritage.
