About Baldoon Castle
A 17th-century tower house with connections to Sir Walter Scott's "The Bride of Lammermoor."
History of Baldoon Castle
Built in the 17th century, Baldoon Castle gained literary fame through its connection to Sir Walter Scott's novel "The Bride of Lammermoor," which was inspired by tragic events that occurred here. The castle served as the seat of the Dunbar family and witnessed the mysterious death of Janet Dalrymple shortly after her marriage, an event that inspired Scott's romantic tragedy. Though now ruined, Baldoon's literary connections and dramatic history make it one of Galloway's most romantically significant castles. The ruins stand as a monument to both Scotland's architectural heritage and its influence on world literature through Scott's powerful storytelling.
