About Balmangan Tower

A 16th-century oblong plan tower house, now ruined but historically significant.

History of Balmangan Tower

Built in the 16th century, Balmangan Tower represents the oblong plan design that was popular among smaller Scottish castles during the Renaissance period. This design provided efficient use of space while maintaining defensive capabilities, making it practical for lesser nobility who wanted the prestige of castle living without the expense of larger structures. The tower's ruins demonstrate the quality of stonework and architectural planning that went into even modest Scottish castles. Though now fragmentary, Balmangan's remains contribute to our understanding of how Scottish castle architecture adapted to different social and economic circumstances during the transition from medieval to modern times.
