Balvenie Castle

Balvenie Castle, located in the heart of Speyside near Dufftown, Scotland, is a remarkable example of medieval architecture. Originally built in the 13th century by the powerful Comyn family, it was strategically positioned to control the surrounding lands. The castle's early history is marked by its involvement in the Wars of Scottish Independence, during which it changed hands multiple times. In the 14th century, it came under the ownership of the Black Douglases, one of Scotland's most influential families. Following their downfall, the castle was granted to John Stewart, the first Earl of Atholl, in the 15th century. Under the Stewarts, Balvenie was transformed into a luxurious residence, reflecting the family's status and wealth. Despite its grandeur, the castle fell into disrepair by the 18th century and was eventually abandoned. Today, Balvenie Castle is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and is open to the public. Visitors can explore its impressive ruins, including the curtain wall and the remnants of the great hall, which offer a glimpse into its storied past.
