About Banff Castle
A 12th-century castle that once controlled the important burgh of Banff.
History of Banff Castle
Built in the 12th century, Banff Castle was a royal stronghold controlling the strategically important burgh of Banff and its harbor. The castle served as a administrative center and defensive position overlooking the Moray Firth. Though no remains survive today, historical records indicate it was a significant fortress in medieval Scotland's northern defenses. The loss of this castle represents the common fate of many early stone fortifications that were either destroyed in warfare or demolished for their stone.
