About Brechin Castle
An 18th-century country house built by the Earls of Dalhousie.
History of Brechin Castle
Built in 1709, Brechin Castle replaced an earlier medieval fortress and became the seat of the Earls of Dalhousie. The castle represents the Georgian period's preference for comfort and elegance over military functionality. The Ramsay family, who became Earls of Dalhousie, were prominent in Scottish and British politics, with members serving as governors-general of India and Canada. The castle and its policies remain a fine example of 18th-century Scottish architecture and landscaping, demonstrating the wealth and sophistication of Scotland's noble families during this period.
