Burleigh Castle

Burleigh Castle, a remarkable example of Scottish tower house architecture, was constructed in the late 15th century by the Balfour family, a prominent Scottish clan. Originally designed as a fortified residence, the castle features a distinctive round corner tower, which is an unusual architectural element for its time. Over the centuries, Burleigh Castle witnessed several significant historical events, including its involvement in the turbulent times of the Jacobite risings. The Balfours were staunch supporters of the Jacobite cause, which led to the castle being besieged and partially dismantled in the early 18th century. Despite these challenges, the castle remained in the possession of the Balfour family until the late 18th century. Today, Burleigh Castle is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and is open to the public. Although partially ruined, the castle's unique architectural features, such as the corbelled parapet and the remnants of the courtyard, continue to attract visitors interested in Scotland's rich medieval heritage. The site offers a glimpse into the life of the Scottish nobility during the Middle Ages and stands as a testament to the country's complex and fascinating history.
