About Cardoness Castle

A well-preserved 15th-century tower house overlooking Wigtown Bay.

History of Cardoness Castle

Built in the 15th century by the McCulloch family, Cardoness Castle is one of the best-preserved tower houses in Galloway, standing impressively above Wigtown Bay. The six-story tower demonstrates the sophisticated lifestyle of a prosperous medieval family, with its great hall, private chambers, and defensive features all remarkably intact. The castle's strategic position allowed the McCullochs to control land and sea routes in southwestern Scotland. The tower's excellent preservation, managed by Historic Scotland, provides visitors with an authentic experience of medieval castle living, from the ground-floor storage areas to the wall-walk with stunning views across the Solway Firth.
