About Castle Campbell

The dramatic "Castle of Gloom" in Dollar Glen, former Lowland stronghold of Clan Campbell.

History of Castle Campbell

Originally known as Castle Gloom, this early 15th-century castle was renamed Castle Campbell when it became a Lowland stronghold of the powerful Campbell clan. Built in a spectacular setting within Dollar Glen, the castle combines a 15th-century tower house with a late 15th-century hall range, creating one of Scotland's most dramatically situated fortresses. The Campbells used it as a power base for their expansion beyond their Highland territories in Argyll. Though now a ruin managed by Historic Scotland, the castle's commanding position high above the glen makes it one of Scotland's most memorably located castles, earning its nickname from the dramatic topography that surrounds it.
