Castle Fraser

Castle Fraser, located in Aberdeenshire near Inverurie, is a prominent example of a Scottish tower house. Construction of the castle began in 1575 and was completed in 1636. It was originally built as a Z-plan tower house, a common architectural style in Scotland during that period. The site may have hosted an earlier structure, as some evidence suggests construction could date back to the mid-1400s. Initially known as Muchalls-in-Mar, Castle Fraser has undergone numerous extensions and modernisations over the centuries. The castle's interior saw significant reconstruction between 1820 and 1850, reflecting changing tastes and requirements of the time. Externally, the castle has been altered multiple times, yet it retains its historical character. The estate spans over 300 acres and includes beautifully maintained walled gardens. In 1976, Castle Fraser was entrusted to the care of the National Trust for Scotland, ensuring its preservation and accessibility to the public. Today, visitors can explore the restored castle and its grounds, gaining insight into its rich history and architectural evolution.
