About Castle Fraser

Castle Fraser is a magnificent example of a tower house, which has developed into a stately home during its long lifetime. The castle was originally built as a Z-plan tower house. Construction began in 1575 and would take until 1636 to complete, but it's argued that the actual date of the construction is in the mid-1400s and the current Castle stands on the foundations of an earlier castle. Externally, Castle Fraser, which was originally known as Muchalls-in-Mar, has been repeatedly extended and modernised over the years and the interior of the castle was completely reconstructed between 1820 and 1850. Castle Fraser stands in over 300 acres of grounds and has magnificent walled gardens. Castle Fraser was given into the care of the Scottish National Trust in 1976.
