About Castle Gordon
Castle Gordon lies in its own substantial grounds, close to the Moray town of Fochabers. The original castle was built in the 1470s by George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly. The castle was extended repeatedly and by 1769, it had become one of the largest country piles in Scotland. The deaths of the 7th and 8th Dukes of Gordon incurred enormous death duties, instigating the sale of other Gordon lands and the demolition of large parts of the house, leaving only the 16th-century tower, known as Bog o'Gight and one wing of the 1770's extension. The house has been recently refurbished and is available as an exclusive use accommodation venue. Tip: Castle Gordon itself isn't generally open to the public but the walled garden, shop and much of the grounds are; they even make, among other things, their own gin.
