About Castle Gorm

The remains of Castle Gorm stand on a small island in Loch Gorm, on the Island of Islay, in the Inner Hebrides on Scotland's west coast. It is unclear when the castle was built by the Clan Donald, but was originally square in shape with a bastion on each corner. Records show that the castle was attacked in 1578 and again in 1608 when the castle was largely destroyed, but then re-built, to some degree, by Sir James MacDonald in 1615 and garrisoned in 1639, but again destroyed soon after. Loch Gorm is the largest freshwater loch on Islay and one of the island's best brown trout fishing locations. Tip: There is a circular road which surrounds Loch Gorm, which is a very pleasant drive indeed. On a summer evening, the sunsets can be breath-taking.
