Castle Grant

Castle Grant, located approximately 1.5 miles north of Grantown-on-Spey in the Highland council area of the Scottish Highlands, is a significant historical site originally built in the 15th century. Initially known as Freuchie Castle, it served as the ancestral seat of the Clan Grant, the chiefs of Strathspey. The structure began as a traditional tower house, a common architectural style in Scotland during the late medieval period. In 1694, the castle was renamed Castle Grant. During the 1750s, it underwent substantial expansion under the direction of John Adam, a prominent architect of the time, known for his work in the classical style. These enhancements transformed the castle into a more extensive and sophisticated residence, reflecting the growing prominence of the Grant family. Though the castle is privately owned and not open to the public, it remains an important symbol of the region's history. It is also noted for its alleged haunting by Barbara Grant, a tale rooted in local folklore. The story recounts how Barbara, the daughter of a Laird, died of a broken heart after being imprisoned by her father in one of the castle towers to prevent her marriage to a man deemed unsuitable due to his social standing. This narrative adds a layer of cultural intrigue to the castle's storied past.
