About Castle Grant
The massive Castle Grant stands in its own grounds, about 1.5 miles north of Grantown-on-Spey and was the former seat of the Clan Grant, chiefs of Strathspey in the Scottish Highlands. It was originally named Freuchie Castle, but was renamed Castle Grant in 1694. The castle began life as a fifteenth-century tower house, but was greatly extended in the 1750s by the renowned architect, John Adam. The castle is said to be haunted by Barbara Grant, who was the daughter of the Laird. It's said she died of a broken heart after her father locked her up in one of the castle towers to prevent her from marrying the man she loved. Her father believed this man was of low birth. Tip: Lochindorb Castle is located a short distance north of Castle Grant.
