Castle Menzies

Castle Menzies, originally known as Weem Castle, was constructed in the mid-16th century as the seat of Clan Menzies. Its strategic location near Aberfeldy provided a commanding view of the Tay Valley, making it an important defensive stronghold. The castle's architecture reflects the transition from the medieval fortress style to the more refined Renaissance design, featuring a Z-plan layout with turrets and a central courtyard. Throughout its history, Castle Menzies has witnessed significant events, including sheltering Bonnie Prince Charlie on his way to the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The castle remained in the Menzies family until the early 20th century, when it fell into disrepair. In the 1950s, the Menzies Clan Society undertook extensive restoration efforts to preserve this historic landmark. Today, Castle Menzies is open to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into Scotland's past through its well-preserved rooms and artefacts. The castle also hosts events and weddings, providing a majestic backdrop that continues to celebrate its storied heritage.
