Castle of Mey

The Castle of Mey, originally known as Barrogill Castle, was built in the 16th century by George Sinclair, the 4th Earl of Caithness. It served as the seat of the Sinclair family for generations. The castle's fortunes changed significantly in 1952 when it was purchased by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who restored it extensively and used it as a summer residence. The Queen Mother was deeply fond of the castle, and her presence brought renewed attention to the site. Following her death in 2002, the castle was entrusted to The Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust. Today, the Castle of Mey is open to the public during the summer months, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich history and the personal touches added by the Queen Mother. The castle's gardens, which she lovingly tended, are a highlight for many visitors. The Castle of Mey stands as a testament to Scottish heritage, blending historical architecture with royal legacy, and continues to be a cherished landmark in the northern Scottish landscape.
