About Clackmannan Tower

A 14th-century Bruce family stronghold, symbol of Scotland's smallest historic county.

History of Clackmannan Tower

Built in the 14th century with a 15th-century extension, Clackmannan Tower was the seat of the Bruce family, descendants of Robert the Bruce through his brother Edward. The castle served as the administrative center of Clackmannanshire, Scotland's smallest historic county, and remained with the Bruce family until the 18th century. The tower's strategic position overlooking the River Forth made it an important stronghold controlling river traffic and trade routes. Though now a ruin managed by Historic Scotland, the tower remains a symbol of both the Bruce legacy and the proud independence of Scotland's smallest county.
