About Claypotts Castle
A remarkable 16th-century Z-plan castle, one of Scotland's most complete examples.
History of Claypotts Castle
Built in the 16th century, Claypotts Castle is one of Scotland's finest and most complete examples of the Z-plan design, an innovative architectural form that provided maximum defensive coverage while creating impressive residential spaces. The castle's distinctive angular towers and sophisticated design demonstrate the height of Scottish Renaissance castle architecture. Built by the Strachan family, Claypotts showcases the prosperity and architectural ambition of Scotland's landed families during the relatively peaceful 16th century. Now preserved by Historic Scotland, the castle stands as a masterpiece of Scottish castle design, its unique Z-plan layout and excellent preservation making it one of the most architecturally significant castles in Scotland.
