About Cluny Castle

A Z-plan castle from around 1604, still in residential use.

History of Cluny Castle

Built around 1604, Cluny Castle is an excellent example of a Z-plan castle, featuring the distinctive layout with a central rectangular block flanked by round towers at opposite corners. The castle remains in private hands and continues to be used as a family residence, demonstrating the successful adaptation of historic Scottish architecture for modern living. Located south of Monymusk, it represents the transition period in Scottish castle building when comfort began to take precedence over pure defensive considerations.
