About cortachy-castle
The seat of the Earls of Airlie, featuring Z-plan architecture from the 16th century.
History of cortachy-castle
Cortachy Castle has been the seat of the Ogilvy family, Earls of Airlie, since medieval times. The current structure combines 16th-century Z-plan architecture with 19th-century additions, creating an impressive castellated mansion. The Ogilvies have played significant roles in Scottish history, supporting both the Jacobite cause and later serving in the British military with distinction. The castle is associated with the famous 'Drummer of Cortachy,' a ghostly harbinger said to appear before the death of an Ogilvy. The castle remains the family seat and represents centuries of Scottish noble heritage.
