Craigmillar Castle

Craigmillar Castle, located just a few miles southeast of Edinburgh, is a remarkable example of a medieval Scottish castle. Its origins date back to the late 14th century when Sir John de Preston, a wealthy landowner, began constructing the fortress. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and enhanced by subsequent owners, including the influential Preston family, who added the distinctive tower house. One of Craigmillar's most notable historical moments occurred in the 16th century when Mary, Queen of Scots, sought refuge there following the murder of her secretary, David Rizzio. The castle's strategic location made it a favoured retreat for Scottish royalty, offering both security and proximity to the capital. In the 17th century, the castle fell into decline as the Prestons moved to more modern accommodations, and it was eventually abandoned. Today, Craigmillar Castle is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and remains a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore its well-preserved ruins, including the impressive curtain wall and the picturesque gardens, while enjoying panoramic views of Edinburgh and the surrounding countryside.
