About Crathes Castle

A 16th-century tower house renowned for its painted ceilings and beautiful gardens.

History of Crathes Castle

Built by the Burnett family and completed in 1596, Crathes Castle is famous for its remarkable painted ceilings, particularly the Room of the Nine Nobles and the Room of the Muses. The castle features exceptional examples of Scottish Renaissance interior decoration alongside its classic L-plan tower house architecture. The surrounding gardens are equally renowned, featuring ancient topiary and colorful herbaceous borders. Now managed by the National Trust for Scotland, Crathes represents one of the finest examples of a 16th-century Scottish castle with its interior decoration intact.
