Culloden

Culloden Battlefield, located near Inverness, Scotland, is the historic site of the Battle of Culloden, fought on 16 April 1746. This battle was the final confrontation of the Jacobite Rising of 1745, where the Jacobite forces, led by Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, faced the British government troops commanded by the Duke of Cumberland. The clash resulted in a decisive defeat for the Jacobites, effectively ending their campaign to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British throne. The battle was notable for its brutality and the subsequent harsh reprisals against the Highlanders, which led to significant cultural and social changes in Scotland, including the dismantling of the traditional clan system. Today, Culloden Battlefield is preserved as a poignant memorial to those who fought and died there.
