Culzean

Culzean Castle, located near Maybole in Ayrshire, Scotland, is a masterpiece of Scottish architecture. Originally a simpler tower house built in the late 16th century, it was transformed into the magnificent structure we see today by renowned architect Robert Adam between 1777 and 1792. Commissioned by David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassillis, the castle was designed to impress with its dramatic clifftop location overlooking the Firth of Clyde. Over the centuries, Culzean has witnessed numerous historical events, including its use as a military headquarters during World War II. In 1945, the Kennedy family gifted the castle to the National Trust for Scotland, with the stipulation that the top floor be offered to General Dwight D. Eisenhower in recognition of his role during the war. Today, Culzean Castle is a popular tourist attraction, renowned for its opulent interiors, extensive gardens, and the Eisenhower Apartment, which remains a tribute to its wartime history.
