About Delgatie Castle

A well-preserved 16th-century castle famous for its association with Mary Queen of Scots.

History of Delgatie Castle

Delgatie Castle, completed in 1579, is renowned for its connections to Mary Queen of Scots, who stayed here for three days in 1562. The castle features exceptional painted ceilings from the 16th and 17th centuries, including portraits and elaborate decorative schemes. Built by the Hay family, it exemplifies the Scottish Baronial style with its distinctive roofline and turrets. The castle has been carefully restored and remains one of Scotland's best-preserved examples of a 16th-century tower house with its original interior decoration largely intact.
