Drochil Castle West

Commissioned by James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton, who served as the Regent of Scotland, the castle's construction began in 1578. Morton, a powerful and influential figure, envisioned Drochil as a grand residence that would assert his dominance and provide a safe haven amidst the political unrest of the time. However, the castle was never completed. The downfall of Morton, who was executed in 1581, left the structure unfinished. Despite its incomplete state, the castle's design reflects the transition from medieval fortresses to more modern, comfortable residences.
