About Duart Castle

The iconic seat of Clan MacLean on the Isle of Mull, spectacularly restored in the 20th century.

History of Duart Castle

Dating from the 13th century, Duart Castle occupies a commanding position on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Sound of Mull. For over 400 years it served as the principal stronghold of Clan MacLean, one of Scotland's most powerful Highland clans. The castle was lost by the MacLeans in 1691 but dramatically restored by Sir Fitzroy MacLean in 1911-12, making it one of the most successful castle restoration projects in Scotland. Today it stands as an enduring symbol of Highland clan loyalty and the romantic appeal of Scottish castle architecture, offering visitors spectacular views and insights into clan history.
