Dunadd Fort

Dunadd Fort, located near Kilmartin in Argyll, Scotland, is a site of immense historical significance, believed to have been established around the 6th century AD. It served as the capital of the kingdom of Dál Riata, a Gaelic overkingdom that spanned parts of western Scotland and northeastern Ireland. The fort is strategically positioned on a rocky hill, offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape, which was crucial for defence and communication. Dunadd is renowned for its role as a ceremonial site where kings of Dál Riata were inaugurated. The site features a distinctive carved footprint, believed to be part of the coronation ritual, symbolising the king's connection to the land.
