About Dunaverty Castle
A 13th-century clifftop fortress at the southern tip of Kintyre.
History of Dunaverty Castle
Built in the 13th century, Dunaverty Castle occupies a dramatic clifftop position at the southern tip of the Kintyre Peninsula, commanding views across the sea to Ireland. This strategic location made it crucial for controlling the sea routes between Scotland and Ireland, serving various Highland clans and royal officials. The castle played important roles in the complex politics of the western Highlands and the struggles between Scottish kings and the Lords of the Isles. Though now ruined, its spectacular clifftop setting and historical significance as a gateway between Scotland and Ireland make it one of Argyll's most dramatically situated castle remains, embodying the maritime heritage of the western Highlands.
