About Dunollie Castle

The ancient seat of the MacDougall Lords of Lorne, overlooking Oban Bay.

History of Dunollie Castle

Dating from the 13th century, Dunollie Castle was the principal stronghold of the MacDougalls, Lords of Lorne and descendants of Somerled, King of the Isles. The castle occupies a strategic position overlooking Oban Bay, controlling the sea routes of the western Highlands. As the seat of one of Scotland's most ancient noble families, Dunollie played a crucial role in the complex politics of medieval Scotland, particularly during the Wars of Independence. Though now ruined, the castle remains in MacDougall ownership and stands as a monument to their ancient lordship and the maritime heritage of Argyll.
