Duntulum Castle Isle of Skye

Duntulm Castle, located on the Trotternish Peninsula of the Isle of Skye, is a site steeped in history and legend. Originally a Pictish fort, the castle was developed in the 14th and 15th centuries by the MacLeods of Dunvegan. By the 16th century, it became the stronghold of the MacDonalds of Sleat, a powerful clan in the region. The castle's strategic location provided a defensive advantage, overseeing the Minch and guarding against Viking and rival clan incursions. Duntulm Castle was the site of many clan skirmishes and played a significant role in the clan feuds that characterised much of Scotland's history. Notably, it was abandoned in the 1730s when the MacDonalds moved to a more modern residence nearby, leaving the castle to fall into ruin. Today, Duntulm Castle stands as a romantic ruin, with its crumbling walls and dramatic cliffside setting attracting visitors from around the world. While much of the structure has succumbed to the elements, the site remains an evocative reminder of Scotland's rich and tumultuous past.
