About Dunyvaig Castle
A 13th-century MacDonald stronghold on Islay, controlling the southern Hebrides.
History of Dunyvaig Castle
Built in the 13th century, Dunyvaig Castle served as a principal stronghold of the MacDonalds, Lords of the Isles, controlling their territories in the southern Hebrides. Located on the island of Islay, the castle commanded the sea routes between Ireland and Scotland, making it strategically vital for the maritime empire of the Lords of the Isles. The castle's courtyard design reflects the sophisticated military architecture of medieval Scotland's island fortresses. Though now ruined, Dunyvaig represents the power and reach of the MacDonald lordship, which at its height controlled much of western Scotland from strongholds like this across the Hebrides.
