About Edzell Castle

A ruined 16th-century castle famous for its unique Renaissance pleasure garden.

History of Edzell Castle

Built by the Lindsay family in the 16th century, Edzell Castle is renowned for its remarkable Renaissance garden, one of the finest examples in Scotland. The garden, created around 1604, features intricate carved panels depicting the planetary deities, liberal arts, and cardinal virtues. The castle itself demonstrates the transition from fortress to comfortable residence, with its distinctive red sandstone architecture. Though now ruined, the castle and garden represent the cultural flowering of Renaissance Scotland, combining Scottish castle traditions with Continental European garden design.
