History of Fetternear House

Little remains above ground of the 13th-century Fetternear Castle. Also known as Fetternear Palace, the castle was built by Bishop Ramsay, Bishop of Aberdeen, in 1226 and extended by his successor, Bishop Kyninmond in 1330. These lands remained in the hands of the Bishops until they came into the possession of the Clan Lesley in 1550, and it was they who built a tower house here in the 1560s. The property passed to the Clan Abercrombie in 1627 but was returned to the Leslies in 1690. The house was repeatedly extended over the years but was damaged by fire in 1745, then repaired, however, the house was destroyed by fire in 1919.
