About Fingask Castle
Fingask Castle overlooks the Carse of Gowrie, built by Clan Bruce.
History of Fingask Castle
Fingask Castle stands on the Sidlaw Hills overlooking the Carse of Gowrie and the River Tay beyond. The lands here were held by the Clan Kinnaird from the early medieval period but passed to the Clan Bruce towards the end of the 1400s, and it was they who built the castle. The castle and lands passed to the Threipland family in the 1660s. The Threipland family were staunch Jacobites and paid dearly for their loyalties. Sir Patrick Threipland died in captivity in Stirling Castle for supporting James VII, in 1689; his son, David was forfeited for supporting the rebel cause in the Rising of 1715. Fingask was badly damaged by government troops in 1745 and another David Threipland was killed at the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745. The estate was eventually recovered by the family.
