Finlaggan Island of

Finlaggan, situated on the picturesque Isle of Islay, holds a significant place in Scottish history as the power centre of the Lords of the Isles. This clan, the MacDonalds, ruled the Hebrides and parts of the western Scottish mainland from the 13th to the 15th centuries. The site comprises two islands, Eilean Mòr and Eilean na Comhairle, on Loch Finlaggan. Eilean Mòr was the administrative heart, where the Lords held council and feasts, while Eilean na Comhairle hosted the council meetings. The Lords of the Isles wielded considerable autonomy, maintaining their own court and laws, and were influential in the Gaelic cultural revival during their reign. Finlaggan's strategic location facilitated control over maritime routes and trade. However, the power of the Lords waned by the late 15th century, culminating in the forfeiture of their lands to the Scottish Crown in 1493. Today, Finlaggan is an archaeological site, with ongoing excavations revealing artefacts and structures that offer insights into its storied past. Visitors can explore the evocative ruins and learn about the site's rich history at the Finlaggan Trust's visitor centre, which provides a glimpse into the life and times of this once-great lordship.
