About Fordell Castle
Fordell Castle is a Z-plan tower house surrounded by woodlands in Fife.
History of Fordell Castle
Fordell Castle stands in its own grounds surrounded by woodlands about 1.5 miles north of Dalgety Bay in Fife. The castle is a Z-plan tower house which was constructed in about 1580 on the site of a much older castle which may date from as early as the 1200s. The castle was home to the Clan Airth who also owned Plean or Cockabendy Castle (see that listing). The castle passed to the Clan Henderson and soon after, Mary, Queen of Scots, visited for a wedding. A less welcome visitor was Oliver Cromwell who garrisoned the castle in the 1650s. The castle is still surrounded by a wall but the defensive curtain wall, drawbridge and portcullis have all long gone; no trace remains. No facilities.
