About Forfar Castle
An 11th-century royal castle that once dominated Forfar, now completely vanished.
History of Forfar Castle
Built in the 11th century, Forfar Castle was one of Scotland's earliest royal strongholds, controlling the important burgh of Forfar in the heart of Angus. The castle served as a royal residence and administrative center during the reigns of early Scottish kings. Historical records show it was a significant fortress in medieval Scotland, but like many early castles, it was eventually demolished and its stones reused for other buildings. Today, only the name Castle Street in Forfar recalls the location of this once-mighty royal fortress that played an important role in Scotland's early history.
