About Forse Castle

Forse Castle ruins stand on a rocky peninsula in a sad state of repair.

History of Forse Castle

The remains of Forse Castle stand on a steep rocky peninsula a couple of miles south of Lybster in Sutherland. This once strong castle was accessible only by drawbridge on the land side and protected by 150 feet cliffs on the North Sea side. The castle was built, or rather, rebuilt by the Clan Cheyne after inheriting the wooden structure which stood here prior to this by marriage in the 1300s. The castle later passed to the Clans Keith then Sutherland. The castle seems to have been inhabited up until the late 1600s before being abandoned. Sadly, the castle is in a sad state of repair and looks as if it will disappear completely in the next few years. If visiting, please remember the structure is unstable and safety equipment is essential; even today, Forse Castle is difficult to get into.
