About Fortar Castle

Fortar Castle in Glenisla was restored to magnificent accommodation standard.

History of Fortar Castle

Fortar Castle stands in the beautiful Glenisla within the Cairngorms National Park. The castle was built in 1560 by the Clan Ogilvy of Airlie. In 1640, the castle was destroyed when a force of 5000 men under the command of Lord Argyll (Clan Campbell) lay siege to the castle, then, after a bombardment with heavy artillery, the castle fell. The castle would remain a ruin for the next 350 years. Fortar Castle has been restored to a magnificent standard and is available as accommodation. Having stayed here myself, I can testify to the quality of the castle's accommodation. Tip: Dalnaglar Castle is very closeby.
