About Foulis Castle
Foulis Castle is a Highland mansion with 12th-century origins, home to Clan Munro.
History of Foulis Castle
Foulis Castle stands in its own grounds a few miles north-east of Dingwall in the Scottish Highlands. The lands here were, for centuries, the property of the Clan Munro who built the first fortification here in the 12th century which was a motte-and-bailey. The Clan were at the forefront of Scottish history and fought in the Wars of Scottish Independence and the Rough Wooing. The Munros largely supported the Hanoverian Crown during the Jacobite Risings and consequently, Foulis Castle was attacked by the Jacobites. The castle was rebuilt in the 1750s assuming a more mansion-like form, fashion rather than defence being the priority. Holiday accommodation is available through Airbnb.
