About Fowlis Castle

Fowlis Castle is a restored 14th-century tower house between Coupar Angus and Dundee.

History of Fowlis Castle

Fowlis Castle stands in the hamlet of Fowlis at roughly the midway point between Coupar Angus and Dundee in Angus. The exact date a castle was first built here is unclear, but the early to mid-1400s seem a safe bet. This once formidable castle has been much altered over the years and the curtain wall which surrounded the castle is no more. These were the lands of the Clan Maule which passed to the Mortimers and the Murrays but it is with the Clan Grey that the castle is most associated. The castle was abandoned for many years but has been restored and is a private residence.
