About Frenchland Tower

Frenchland Tower is a 16th-century tower house near Moffat built by the French family.

History of Frenchland Tower

The remains of Frenchland Tower stand on farmland about a mile to the east of Moffat in the Scottish Borders. The tower was constructed as a plain tower house of 3 storeys in the 16th century but later additions transformed it into an L-plan mansion. The lands were the property of the French family who had held them from at least the 13th century, and it was they who built the tower. There is some evidence that there was an earlier fortification on this site prior to the 16th century. The French family held the lands until they were sold to the Veitch family in the mid-1800s.
