History of Freswick House
Freswick Castle or Freswick House stands a couple of miles south of John o' Groats, close to the north-east tip of the Scottish Mainland. It is believed by many that the ruins which occupy the site today were built to replace an earlier fortification. Whether it was or not is open to debate but it was the site of a Norse settlement from at least the 12th century. The intact building we see today dates from the early 16th century and was built by the Clan Mowat but passed to the Clan Sinclair in the 1720s. Today, Freswick hosts art events, offers conference facilities and is available as an exclusive use accommodation venue which can sleep up to 15 guests and is available for weddings.
