Gairlies Castle ruins stand on a hill near Newton Stewart, held by Clan Stewart.
History of Gairlies Castle
The remains of Gairlies Castle stand on a small hill about 2.5 miles from the handsome Borders town of Newton Stewart. Although much dilapidated and overgrown, it is still easy to see that this was a formidable fortress built in a strong position. The date of the castle's construction is uncertain but the middle of the 14th century would be a good guess. Gairlies was held by the Clan Stewart from its earliest times until the 20th century. Alexander Stewart of Garlies was killed at the disastrous Battle of Flodden in 1513.
