About Gardyne Castle
Gardyne Castle is a 16th-century tower house extended over the centuries.
History of Gardyne Castle
Gardyne Castle stands in its own grounds about a mile south-west of Friockheim in Angus. The castle was constructed by the Clan Gardyne in the 1560s but may well incorporate elements of an earlier fortification. The current castle has been much extended. The castle was constructed by the Clan Gardyne who had their lands confiscated by King James VI because of their incessant feuding with the Clan Guthrie. In 1682, the lands passed to the Clan Lyle who held them until the 1960s. The castle is not open to the public and is a private residence.
