About Gylen Castle

A 16th-century MacDougall castle on the island of Kerrera, overlooking the Firth of Lorne.

History of Gylen Castle

Built in 1582 by the MacDougalls of Dunollie, Gylen Castle occupies a spectacular clifftop position on the island of Kerrera, commanding views over the Firth of Lorne. The castle was constructed during the Renaissance period when Scottish castle architecture was evolving from pure fortification toward more comfortable residences. Gylen served as an additional stronghold for the MacDougall chiefs, supplementing their main castle at Dunollie. The castle's dramatic island setting and well-preserved tower make it one of Scotland's most photographed ruins, accessible by ferry and a scenic walk that rewards visitors with stunning views of the western Highlands.
