Huntingtower Castle

Huntingtower Castle, originally known as the House of Ruthven, was constructed in the late 15th century and served as the ancestral home of the influential Ruthven family. The castle is renowned for its twin tower design, a rare architectural feature for its time. In 1582, it was the setting for the 'Ruthven Raid', a dramatic event where the young King James VI was held captive by the Ruthven family in a political coup. Over the years, the castle witnessed several significant historical events, including the downfall of the Ruthvens following their involvement in the Gowrie Conspiracy of 1600, leading to the forfeiture of their estates. In the 17th century, the castle became the property of the Murray family, who later became the Dukes of Atholl. Today, Huntingtower Castle is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and is open to the public. Visitors can explore its well-preserved rooms, admire the remarkable painted ceilings, and enjoy panoramic views from the castle's towers. The site offers a fascinating glimpse into Scotland's tumultuous past and architectural evolution.
