About Inveraray Castle
The Gothic Revival seat of the Dukes of Argyll, one of Scotland's grandest ducal residences.
History of Inveraray Castle
Built from 1746, Inveraray Castle is a magnificent Gothic Revival mansion that replaced an earlier castle as the seat of the Dukes of Argyll, chiefs of Clan Campbell. Designed by Roger Morris and later completed by Robert Mylne, the castle represents the pinnacle of 18th-century Scottish aristocratic architecture. The Campbell family, among Scotland's most powerful noble houses, created a residence that reflects their wealth, political influence, and cultural sophistication. The castle houses an exceptional collection of weaponry, furniture, and clan artifacts, while its fairy-tale towers and turrets make it one of Scotland's most photographed castles.
